We are coming upon the end of the 2nd week of the Instagram Builder’s Challenge 6. I have to say that I successfully completed my desk as of Thursday afternoon and uploaded my pics and completion form Thursday night! If you follow me on Instagram you may have already seen the completed desk…but I’m super pumped to share it with you today on the blog. If you missed the first post or want a quick run-down of what the Instagram Builder’s Challenge is, check out last week’s post “IG Builder’s Challenge – Week 1”.
First off, I’m super grateful for finding the Instagram Builder’s Challenge. I’ve found so many new people to follow and everyone taking part in the challenge has been super supportive and helpful. I’ve gotten so many tips on how to install drawer slides. There are also so many creative ideas out there for this fall’s challenge that I can’t wait until next weekend to see everyone’s submission (so far less than 10 of us have submitted our final projects).
So last week the only thing I seemed to have accomplished was to assemble the frame and paint the frame black (instead of the crazy “glitter silvery bronze” color it was before). I had a ton of stuff left to do and was able to do a lot over the weekend. At the end of last week I still had to build the drawers, stain the drawer fronts, install the side panels, install the drawer slides, install the hardware, and install the back panel…so basically everything had to be done.
If you remember from last week I also wanted to do this “fancy” design for the drawer fronts incorporating metal…however when I tested out different designs I discovered that the drawer fronts were a little too thick to see the reflective properties of the metal gleaming through so I ultimately ended up deciding to continue with the wooden drawer fronts and return the aluminum metal sheet back to the hardware store.
Although my metal work drawer fronts I envisioned didn’t pan out as planned, I am still super excited with how it turned out. I know that it doesn’t really have any additional “creative vision” but the desk plans to begin with were already my style. While I was worried about my lack of “creative vision”, it’s perfect for me. Although I may not win anything (there’s hundreds of applicants) I still needed a desk, am happy with how it turned out, proud to have learned a new skill, it was fun, and I get a free t-shirt for being one of the first 75 to submit their completed project!
Without further ado, here’s the final pics of my industrial desk!
This challenge definitely pushed me despite building almost the exact plan as I have shied away from building drawers thus far. The only thing I altered was the width of the desk, making it slightly more narrow. I am pleased to be able to share those plans after the challenge is over, as they will officially be posted to the DIY Huntress’s blog for everyone after the challenge is complete. I will also be providing links to the products I used and my specific product and cut list for those who’d like to build one similar to mine, so stay tuned for that post.
